Daouda Dembele is a griot from outside of Segou, Mali. His music is hypnotic, drawn-out praise singing in the ancient Malian jeli tradition, with jelingoni – something of an ancestor to the banjo – accompaniment. This kind of song might not be unlike a song you'd have heard a thousand years ago, except Dembele's songs were played sometime in the last 30 years, probably.
